Reaffirming Our Commitment to Post-Secondary Equity: Reflections from the 2025 NCAN National Conference

Earlier this fall, our very own Courtney Fauss, Senior Director of Programs and Engagement, had the privilege of attending the 2025 National College Attainment Network (NCAN) National Conference in vibrant New Orleans. This annual gathering is one of the premier convenings for professionals dedicated to advancing post-secondary access and success, and this year’s event once again reminded us why this work matters so deeply.

With over 1,500 participants representing K-12 schools, higher education institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and philanthropic organizations, the NCAN Conference brought together a richly diverse community of practitioners and thought leaders. The theme and structure—featuring multiple workshop sessions, plenaries, and networking events—were intentionally designed to center student stories and equity in post-secondary pathways. Each conversation, whether during a session or a hallway chat, underscored NCAN’s mission to support members and influence leaders, organizations, policies, and systems across the US to increase equity in post-secondary degree access and attainment.

The conference agenda covered a wide range of critical topics, including post-secondary access and completion strategies for underrepresented students, financial aid, affordability, policy updates at both state and federal levels, cross-sector collaboration, equity, and inclusion with a strong emphasis on centering student voices in program design. Every shared story served as a vivid reminder that behind every policy or program we discuss are real students whose futures are shaped by our collective actions.

NCAN also presented the Awards of Excellence, honoring organizations and individuals whose work exemplifies innovation, impact, and commitment to increasing college attainment. These stories of progress and perseverance were powerful sources of inspiration for what’s possible when we align around shared goals and values.

Beyond the scheduled agenda, the conference provided invaluable opportunities to forge new relationships with like-minded organizations and practitioners from across the country. Through conversations and collaborations, we were able to exchange best practices, share lessons learned, and explore potential partnerships to expand our reach and impact. This event was a wonderful opportunity for Earn to Learn to enhance our visibility within the national college access ecosystem, open doors for joint initiatives, and collective impact, and integrate fresh ideas and innovations into our own programs.

The incredible energy and insights from New Orleans reaffirmed why our work is not just necessary but urgent. By continuing to learn from one another and amplifying the voices of the students we serve, we move closer to a future where every student has the opportunity to pursue the education of their dreams.
